Toast to ‘Ulalena

There is a Wind and Rain particular to Maui that rises at twilight. The ancient Hawaiian name for this is ‘Ulalena and it whispers of other places and other times, both mythical and real. It is hopeful and cleansing and it blows between daylight and night, between times and worlds.

As I’m about to leave Maui, it is time to raise my Mai-Tai and make a skål (toast) to Daria, Wayne, Kingston, Kaya, the rest of the Greene’s and Boone’s, the other people I have met and the places I’ve been; the Gazebo, the mountains, the jungle, the black volcano-beaches and to the ‘Ulalena. Aloha and a million thanks. Norwaii <3 Hawaii
